Hurricanes' Martinook enters COVID protocol

Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes announced forward Jordan Martinook entered COVID protocol on Thursday.

According to NHL rules, if Martinook has tested positive, he must quarantine for at least five days before returning to the team, which means he will miss Friday's home game against the New York Rangers and Saturday's road contest against the New Jersey Devils.

The Hurricanes' have missed Martinook's leadership most of the last two months. After going on injured reserve with an ankle injury, the team's alternate captain returned for the Hurricanes' last two games, which were his first since Dec. 2.

Martinook joins Martin Necas on the Hurricanes' COVID protocol list. Only 7 of the team's 22 NHL regular players have not entered COVID protocol yet this season.

The NHL will stop testing asymptomatic players, coaches and staff who are fully vaccinated following the All-Star break in early February.
